Major General Alexander Platzer takes command of EUFOR Operation Althea

It is a great honour for me to be appointed as the Commander of EUFOR Operation Althea and to take command of the longest military operation under the EU’s Common Security and Defence Policy, to date the only EU land operation with an executive mandate.

 

Continued EUFOR presence in BiH

The UN Security Council unanimously adopted resolution 2594 recognising EUFOR’s peace stabilization role under the military aspects of the Dayton Peace Agreement.

Restrictions on entry and exit to Camp Butmir remain in force at this time. Visitors and suppliers should continue to make arrangements with their point of contact before attempting to enter Camp Butmir.

 

Exercise EUFOR Quick Response 2021

  • From the 26th of September to the 01st of October EUFOR will hold its annual exercise.
    This will be the largest exercise that EUFOR has conducted to date.
    Troops will be participating from 6 other countries, including from KFOR. Exercise areas include; Mostar & Čapljina, Trebinje & Bileća, Livno and Sarajevo.

On Wednesday Commander EUFOR, Major General Martin Dorfer, presided over an international Medal Parade at Camp Butmir. Soldiers from 6 nations were decorated with the European Union Common Security and Defence Policy Medal 'Althea' in recognition of their service in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Lieutenant Colonel Krzysztof Buc of the Polish Army took the salute on behalf of the 44-strong parade from COMEUFOR at the ceremony.

Addressing the soldiers on parade, COMEUFOR underlined: ” When you take a close look at your medals today, you will find the Latin phrase “Pro Pace Unum” on it, meaning “United for peace”. I encourage you to wear this medal with pride.”

Master Sergeant Roberto Parisi of the Italian Navy was proud to receive the medal for his first mission abroad. He will finish his deployment in June. Staff Sergeant Veselka Ivanova was delighted as well to receive the medal as a visible reward for a successful tour in Bosnia and Herzegovina. She will return home to Bulgaria in April.

teCommander EUFOR thanked all those on parade for their dedicated service in BiH. This time soldiers from Bulgaria, Italy, Poland, North Macedonia, Turkey and the United Kingdom received the Operation Althea Medal. xt
