EUFOR is the military face of the European Union in Bosnia and Herzegovina and a key part of the EU’s efforts in the country.
19 nations are joined in one mission, Operation Althea. To support maintenance of a Safe and Secure Environment, while working together with the local Authorities, especially the Armed Forces of BiH and law enforcement agencies.
EUFOR has in BiH a Headquarters, a Multinational Battalion, and the network of 17 Liaison and observation Teams across BiH. EUFOR also maintains a reserve out of country, that can deploy quickly to BiH if required.
Every year during the Exercise Quick response EUFOR in BiH demonstrates it’s strength and readiness to provide continuous support to security of Bosnia and Herzegovina, assisting on it’s path of European integration.

Supporting mine action in Bosnia and Herzegovina is one of EUFOR’s most important tasks. The AFBIH Demining Battalion, with its 34 demining teams and 9 explosive detection dog teams, is responsible for 35% of yearly demining activities.
In order to maintain and develop demining activities, the European Union will donate new demining equipment to the Armed Forces of BiH, worth 10 million Euros and including 150 metal detectors and 68 new vehicles. This equipment is expected to be delivered by mid 2023.
The Council of the EU took the decision to support the Demining Battalion in November 2021, in cooperation with the EU’s External Action Service (EEAS) and EUFOR.
The aim of this initiative is to contribute to BiH’s National Mine Action Strategy and support EUFOR’s local partners in maintaining a Safe and Secure Environment for all citizens of BiH.
