EUFOR’s Aviation Detachment successfully supported Operation Arx Alpina, providing advanced heavy-lift aviation capabilities to transport and install a new mountain bivouac on Mount Prenj in cooperation with the Jablanica Mountain Rescue Service.
Using a EUFOR CH-47 Chinook helicopter, the specially constructed mountain shelter was safely airlifted to its new location, where it will provide an important refuge for mountaineers, hikers, and emergency responders operating in one of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s most demanding mountain environments.
The bivouac was generously built and donated by the Brkanović family in memory of their daughter and sister, Maida Brkanović, who tragically passed away in August 2020. Operated by the Jablanica Mountaineering and Hiking Association, it will serve as a lasting memorial while benefiting all those who visit Mount Prenj.
Operation Arx Alpina demonstrated how EUFOR’s unique operational capabilities can support meaningful community initiatives. Working alongside the Jablanica Mountain Rescue Service and local partners, EUFOR employed its specialist aviation assets to enable a project that will deliver lasting benefits for local communities and visitors alike.
Speaking following the operation, EUFOR Commander Major General Maurizio Fronda praised the cooperation between all those involved. “Operation Arx Alpina demonstrated how EUFOR’s capabilities can support the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina beyond our daily activities. We were proud to contribute to a project that honours Maida Brkanović’s memory while providing a lasting benefit for the mountaineering community and all those who enjoy Mount Prenj,” said Major General Fronda.
The operation highlighted the positive impact of cooperation between local communities, emergency services, and international partners. It also reflected EUFOR’s continued commitment to supporting the authorities of Bosnia and Herzegovina by employing its specialist capabilities whenever they can deliver meaningful benefits for communities across the country.
