Major General Maurizio Fronda
Major General Maurizio Fronda was born in Terracina (LATINA), Italy, on 2nd May 1969. In 1985 he embarked on his military career. He attended the 198th course at the "Nunziatella" Italian Military School (1985-88), the Military Academy of Modena (170th Course “Audacia”) and the School of Application of Turin earning a Bachelor of Political Sciences degree. Since then, he has held a wide range of positions, combining operational command with staff roles at the Italian Army General Staff and NATO Strategic Command, developing experience in all areas of joint cooperation and intelligence.
Appointed Lieutenant in 1993, at the end of his military studies, he was assigned to the 185th Parachute Artillery Regiment "FOLGORE" in LIVORNO. With his regiment, he took part in the NATO IFOR “JOINT ENDEAVOR” operation (1996) and in the NATO SFOR operation (1999), in Bosnia-Herzegovina as Platoon Leader and Staff Officer.
To further complement his high professional knowledge, after attending the General Staff Course, and the Master in Strategic Studies at the War School in Turin, he attended the Portuguese Superior War College at the “Center for High Military Studies” in Lisbon (POR). From September 2005 to July 2006, he attended the Joint General Staff Higher Institute (ISSMI), at the “Centre for Defense Higher Studies” in Rome, at the end of which he served at the Italian Army General Staff as Officer in charge of the Personnel Employment Department. In 2008, during his service in Rome, he was employed in Bosnia-Herzegovina as Military Assistant to the Deputy Commander of EUFOR operation ALTHEA.
Increasingly challenging roles saw him engaged from 2009 to 2016, including the role of the Command of the Group and the Regiment of the 185th Reconnaissance and Target Acquisition Regiment (RRAO) “FOLGORE”, a Special Forces unit composed of specially selected and trained personnel, equipped to carry out the full spectrum of tasks and specialized in conducting Special Reconnaissance and Terminal Fire Control operations. In 2011, in his role as Group Commander, he was deployed in AFGHANISTAN as Commander of Task Force "Victor", within NATO ISAF mission.
From 2016 to 2019, he served as Deputy Chief of Staff Education and Doctrine at NATO Special Operations Headquarters (NSHQ), Mons, Belgium.
Promoted to Brigadier General, in 2019, for his extensive experience in highly demanding national and international roles and his ability to adapt to complex, multinational environments, he was selected by the Italian Defense General Staff to take on the sensitive role of the Commander of the Bilateral Assistance and Support Mission (MIASIT) in LIBYA, aiming to give assistance and support to the Libyan National Government Agreement.
In 2020, upon his return to Italy, he assumed command of the Italian Army Tactical Intelligence Brigade, a unit that includes all the main capabilities of tactical intelligence gathering and valorization of the Armed Forces, such as Electronic Warfare assets, instrumental surveillance of the operational area, and human intelligence collection.
Promoted to Major General in 2024, he took command of the Italian Division “Acqui” until November 2025, during which he was involved in numerous International Command Post exercises, including on the European eastern flank, to test the operational readiness of the Division and its five Brigades.
As military paratrooper, he got the qualification as “Target Acquirer” in 1999, as well as the qualification for free-fall launches, and he is awarded with the Italian, French, American, Spanish, Jordanian and Romanian military paratrooper patent.
For his service, he has been awarded several national and international honors and decorations and in particular, he received the Knight of the Military Order of Italy, 2 Army Silver Crosses of merit, the Gold Medal for Long Command and the Silver Medal for Long Parachuting Activity. He was also awarded honors by Portugal and France.
Major General FRONDA is married to Mrs. Gerarda and has three children.
Major General FRONDA assumed command over EUFOR ALTHEA on 21 January 2026.
