COMEUFOR Hosts the Strategic Committee for AWE

The 15th session of the Strategic Committee for Ammunition, Weapons and Explosives (AWE) took place in the Army Hall, Sarajevo on Wednesday 8th December 2017. The board meets every 3 months to discuss the Master Plan aimed at solving the issue of surplus weapons, ammunition and explosives in Bosnia and Herzegovina and on this occasion it was hosted by Commander European Union Force (COMEUFOR), Major General Friedrich Schrötter.

The event was chaired by the Deputy Minister for Policy and Planning Mr Sead Jusić. Other attendees included permanent members of the committee from the Armed Forces BiH, NATO, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), as well as representatives of embassies in BiH (The United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Austria and Sweden).

Minister Jusić opened the meeting then Major General Schrötter gave a welcome speech to the delegation where he stated “Working together, we have significantly improved the situation with surplus Ammunition in BiH. We now start to do the same with the surplus weapons issue.” and said the focus of the meeting should be on the following subjects:

  • The acceleration of 100% Inventory and Destruction efforts in 2017;
  • The way ahead on Air Delivered Weapon Systems (ADWS);
  • The engagement of Civilian Defence industry with focus on a regional approach in the disposal process;
  • and Environmental and Disaster Risk Reduction Efforts.
