Welcome Parade for EUFOR’s Intermediate Reserve Troops

On 31 May 2014, in Camp Butmir, Sarajevo, a Welcome Parade was held for EUFOR’s Intermediate Reserve troops.
These troops are EUFOR’s ‘over-the-horizon’ soldiers and currently consist of three companies, of approximately 130 soldiers each, from Austria, Slovenia and the UK.
The troops arrived over the last few days and will remain in BiH for a number of weeks. They were originally deploying here to take part in Exercise Quick Response 14, which was a combined training exercise with the Armed Forces of BiH, but because of the recent flooding, they will now be working with the Armed Forces of BiH on Operation Joint Effort, which is the name given to the combined EUFOR – Armed Forces BiH operation.

EUFOR Intermediate Reserve Companies from Slovenia and Austria

EUFOR’s Intermediate Reserve Companies will start arriving in BiH from 29 May 2014

These Intermediate Reserve Companies are EUFOR’s ‘over-the-horizon’ troops and currently consists of three companies from Austria and Slovenia. They were originally deploying to BiH for ‘Exercise Quick Response 14’ but due to the recent flooding they will now be conducting disaster relief operations jointly with the Armed Forces of BiH. We have given these operations the name of ‘Operation Joint Effort 14’.

In the last few weeks, EUFOR has been providing humanitarian assistance to the BiH authorities, and has conducted over 200 helicopter evacuation flights and evacuated over 800 people. It is envisaged that the arrival of our Intermediate Reserve Companies will build on this assistance previously provided by EUFOR as we work closely with the Armed Forces of BiH to provide further humanitarian assistance in the coming weeks.

Continuing EUFOR support to flood relief

Immediate Medical Aid saved lives
EUFOR has been helping to evacuate the population affected by floods in BiH for six days now. Timely movement and care has been provided by medical personnel to injured and sick people. The EUFOR medical evacuation team, consisting of three doctors and two flight rescuers, has provided immediate medical aid on the evacuation flights of the EUFOR helicopters. Some 41 civilians, including children and the older people, have received emergency treatment and have been transported to hospitals.

Poor weather and low clouds hinder air operations but EUFOR remains on standby

EUFOR air assets remain on standby but low clouds still do not provide sufficient visibility to allow safe air operations. The conditions have also affected EUFOR troops across BiH; in particular the LOT house in Doboj was flooded and could not be evacuated yesterday.
EUFOR air operations are maintaining close contact with AFBiH who know the terrain in detail to coordinate possible evacuation operations today. As soon as weather conditions improve, EUFOR stands ready to start air operations with three helicopters, two of them equipped with winch systems. According to the latest weather forecast this is likely to happen later today.

Several hundreds of people rescued by EUFOR helicopters

This morning EUFOR rescue operations started with a medical evacuation and four more were executed during the day. Around 200 civilians were evacuated in 30 lifts until 4 pm this afternoon. “The older people, children and those who are already weakened and in a critical condition have priority”, said EUFOR Air Chief Lieutenant Colonel Christian Tesar. The flights will continue today until the sunset.

While the main effort of EUFOR air operations yesterday was in the areas of Maglaj, Tuzla and Zenica, the focus of evacuations shifted today to the north of the country, namely to Samac, Doboj, Brcko District and Modrica. To increase the endurance and effectiveness of EUFOR air operations an additional helicopter refuelling point was established in Zenica.

Yesterday, 291 civilians were evacuated in 72 lifts with EUFOR Alouette and Black Hawk helicopters. During the night three trucks were transporting food, water and clothes to Maglaj where they assisted in the dissemination. They returned to Camp Butmir at 6 am this morning standing ready for further assistance to the BiH population.

A mission summary of today will follow in the morning.
